The Ins and Outs of a Gas Rebate Credit Card
A gas rebate credit card can save you money, but only if you use it the right way.
With gas prices as high as they are, it's no wonder that everyone seems to want a gas rebate credit card. Unfortunately, once you look into these cards you often find they're not all they're cracked up to be. Does that mean they're worthless? Absolutely not! It just means that you need to know what you're looking for -- and use it the right way once you find it.
The ideal gas rebate credit card
So what sort of things should you look for in the perfect gas rebate credit card? Remember:
-Don't just look at the gas rebate. What is the card itself like? Check on the interest rate, annual fees, and other things you would normally inspect if you were applying for any other card.
-Is there an annual fee -- and if so, will it balance out your returns?
-Where can you use it? If there are a limited number of stations that accept your card, make sure you have easy access to them where you live.
How to use it
Once you find the ideal gas rebate credit card, it still won't do you much good unless you make the best possible use of it. With that in mind, here are some tips to help you fully maximize your rewards.
-Remember to use the card! There's no sense having a gas rebate credit card if you pay with your debit card most of the time. If you're worried about debt, make sure you have an online account and pay off the balance as soon as you get home.
-If certain stations offer higher rewards than others, try to factor that into your decisions. Don't wait until the car's running on fumes and you have to find the nearest station fast -- plan in advance.
-Check if the card offers more rewards for bigger fills (many cards do) and only fill your tank when you know you need enough gas to maximize your rewards.
If you follow all of these tips, a gas rebate credit card can be a worthwhile thing to have around. Don't get me wrong: gas is expensive and this type of card makes only a small difference. But any difference is a difference, and a gas rebate credit card can help to alleviate the strain of high fuel prices.
