Reduce College Student Credit Card Debt Now
Take steps now to avoid college student credit card debt later.
It just may be that college student credit card debt is one of the biggest financial crises in the country. OK, that might be a bit of an exaggeration -- but not much. Studies show that students graduate massively in debt both due to tuition payments and credit cards, and it's become a major problem nation wide.
Fortunately, there are steps you can take to avoid becoming a statistic -- before, during, and after college!
Before College
This shouldn't come as a big surprise, but start saving early! The more you save up, the easier it'll be to make payments throughout college and avoid falling back on credit cards to avoid starvation.
There are other choices you can make, too. For example, choose a school you can afford, look for schools with good financial aid, and maybe even consider taking a year off to save -- that year will pay off in the long run.
During College
This is where college student credit card debt accumulates, so here's where you're going to have to use your self-control. Create a budget and stick to it. Decide in advance what you can afford and what you plan to use your credit card for.
For example, don't take your credit card out for a night on the town. You'll run out of money and turn to the card when your judgement is, shall we say, slightly impaired -- and the next thing you know you've got a huge credit card bill coming.
Furthermore, make every possible attempt to pay off your credit card as you go. If you ignore the bills or make only the minimum payments, you'll be swimming in college student credit card debt by the time you graduate.
After College
By now you may be kicking yourself, and it's too late to do anything about all that student debt you accumulated -- but not too late to avoid accumulating huge amounts of interest!
If you're facing serious debts, don't delay: consider taking out a consolidation loan or the like to get all of your debts and payments under control. If you think you can handle your payments, well and good -- but make sure you carefully budget to get rid of your debts as soon as possible.
Remember, while college student credit card debt is a problem, it's not the end of the world -- and you can deal with it if you put your mind to it.
