What Makes a Citi Student Credit Card Special?

Who do so many people endorse the Citi student credit card? What's the big deal?

|

The Citi student credit card (also known as the Citi Platinum Select Card for College Students) often comes up in conversation about student credit. Many people consider it one of the top perks for students. So what exactly is this credit card, and why does it matter to you?

Perks

There are definitely reasons for the Citi student credit card's excellent reputation. At the top of the list? The many perks students enjoy with the card. This is more than a credit card: it doubles as a discount card at many businesses.

The Citi student credit card offers opportunities for discounted rates on travel, car rental insurance, emergency help, and even some fraud protection. All of these bonuses make the card a great resource for financially struggling students.

The card's lack of an annual fee is certainly a bonus as well. In addition, the card provides a low introductory interest rate for the first six months -- a rare feature on a student card!

Down side

Nothing's perfect in the credit world, and this card is no exception. Although there isn't an annual fee, the Citi student credit card has a fairly high rate of interest.

The card is called a Platinum card for a reason. Like most platinum cards, you do require a strong credit history to get one. In other words, if you're just starting out and don't have any credit record at all, don't expect one of these to fall into your lap. In addition, the card carries a higher interest rate than some of its counterparts after the first six months are up.

All in all, the Citi student credit card is a great student card if you don't plan to rack up a huge bill. If you're carrying a large balance, that interest rate will get to you. Otherwise, though, if you're eligible for a Citi student credit card, I would leap at the opportunity.
