Calling All First Time Credit Card Applicants!
A Few Things All First Time Credit Card Applicants Need to Know
First time credit card applicants are at risk of falling into the most common pitfalls of the credit card world if someone doesn't take the time to warn them. Fortunately, I'm here to do just that. Before you put your name to that first credit card application, there are some things you need to know...
You've Earned Nothing
Okay, credit cards are kind of like respect. They're something that you aren't necessarily born with a right to. They're something that must be earned. That means you're going to need some kind of good credit history before you qualify for any decent credit card offers.
But how do first time credit card applicants get the credit to qualify for a credit card if they can't get a credit card to begin with? Ahh... That is where things start to get tricky.
Getting the Credit
There are a few ways you can go about getting the credit you need for your first credit card. You can have your parents co-sign for a car loan (oh, yes I can hear your parents screaming at me now). You can pay off that college loan one month at a time as your credit history slowly builds. Of course, you can also throw up a security deposit and qualify for a secured credit card.
Many first time credit card applicants end up using secured cards in the beginning. It's a good way to get decent credit card terms without waiting years for your credit history to create itself. With just a few hundred dollars for a security deposit, you can be on your way to a solid credit rating.
While a secured card might not be your dream credit card of choice, it's definitely a good decision for first time credit card applicants who can't qualify for the traditional unsecured plastic line of credit.
