Make Sure Your Rewards Card Rewards You!

A Few Helpful Tips about Getting the Most from Your Rewards Card

|

Credit cards have become an integral feature of the American financial system, and the rewards card is one of our favorites. As the demand for credit cards has increased, credit card companies have become more competitive, offering rewards programs to lure the business of the most valuable customers. And with all of the varying rewards programs out there, almost everyone can find a credit card to meet their needs. The question is, which rewards card is right for you?

The Choices Are (Practically) Endless

A quick visit to any major credit card company website will show the myriad of options available for rewards programs. Purchases may result in earning cash back, air miles (which can be redeemed towards the purchase of airline tickets), balance credits or points (which can be redeemed towards the "purchase" of items in a catalog provided by the credit card company, or towards a particular purpose, such as the purchase of a vehicle or vacation).

In addition, if your spending habits concentrate your purchases in a particular spending category (such as house wares, or fashion, or pet care), you may be able to find a card that offers greater rewards options for purchases in that category

Pay Attention To The Fine Print

Despite different credit card companies offering the same type of rewards programs, not all programs within the same category of rewards have the same benefits.

For example, two cash back cards from different companies may offer differing percentages of cash back rewards, or may have a limit of the amount of a reward that may be earned within a certain period of time. Or, cards that offer air miles may only allow them to be redeemed within a certain period of time, or for particular airlines.

Determining which credit card rewards program is best is up to the individual consumer, and it is imperative that the consumer pay attention to the "fine print" and not simply think that all cash back or air miles cards offer the same earning percentages or redemption options.

Take your time to do your research and you should be able to find a credit card that gives you rewards and maximizes the returns that you earn on your spending. After all, you are the credit card company's customer -- make sure that you capitalize on that relationship!
